Ipe Clip® INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
|
|
TOOLS NEEDED:
An Electric/Cordless Drill to
pilot holes on a 45 degree angle through the Ipe Clip®
into the deck
board.
Do not drill into joist.
A 1/8” pilot bit is provided with each Ipe Clip® carton.
An Electric/Cordless Screw Gun
for installing TrimTite Screws.
(1) Driver bit is provided with
each Ipe Clip® carton.
A Caulk Gun & exterior
construction adhesive such as Exterior Grade Liquid Nails.
A Biscuit Joiner (common
cabinet maker tool, available from BannerElk Trading Co., Inc.).
The biscuit cutter makes a slot
in the edge of the board to allow insertion of the Ipe Clip®.
OR
If you do not have access to a
biscuit joiner, a Router
with a #20 Biscuit cutting router
bit (also called a 5/32” slot
cutting bit) will work, but may create a safety hazard.
OR
Use a table saw with a 5/32
inch kerf blade (normal table saw blades with 1/8” kerf will not
work)
to rip a continuous slot down
the edge of board to accommodate Ipe Clip®. A double fence
configuration should be used on
table saw to maintain accuracy of slot.
Fastening the First Starter Board:
STEP #1
On the first deck board,
install face screws along the starter side of deck board.
These few screws can be
concealed by countersinking a 3/8” hole and installing the
wood plugs provided.
It is recommended to apply a small amount of construction
adhesive on the joist for the
starter board.
Remaining Deck
Boards:
STEP #2
Using a biscuit joiner, router,
or table saw, cut a slot
in the edge of deck board above each joist.
Assure that the slot height is
such that the bottom tab of the Ipe Clip® touches the joist.
It is recommended to apply a
small amount of construction adhesive on each joist as
deck boards are installed.
STEP #3
Insert Ipe Clip® into the edge
of deck board.
STEP #4
Install the 8 x 2”
TrimTite screws on approximately a 45 degree angle
through hole in the
center of the Ipe Clip®.
Screw should pass into deck board and
then into deck joist.
The head of the screw should just countersink the
hole of the Ipe Clip®.
Fasten board on each
joist using one clip and one screw per joist.
STEP #5
Using a biscuit joiner,
router, or table saw,
cut a slot into the edge of the next deck board.
Slide this board into
the clips protruding from previously fastened deck
board.
STEP #6
Repeat steps 2 through
5 until the last board.
Last Deck Board:
STEP #7
On the last board, it
is necessary to fasten the outside edge from the surface
screws.
These screws can be
concealed by countersinking the 3/8” wood plugs
supplied.
It is also recommended
to apply a small amount of construction adhesive on the
joist
for the last deck
board.
Recommended Method
of Wood Plug Installation
(For 1st and Last Deck Board)
STEP #1 Drill 3/8”
diameter hole approximately ¼” deep.
STEP #2 Drill 7/64”
pilot hole for the 8 X 2” TrimTite Screw.
STEP #3
Insert screw.
STEP #4
Put a few drops of glue (polyurethane based
Gorilla Glue Brand recommended).
STEP #5
Insert tapered wood plug into hole.
Tap slightly with hammer.
STEP #6
When glue is dry, knock excess plug off with a
sharp chisel.
Sand smooth so
that plug is flush with deck surface.
A round random orbit sander with 80 grit
sand paper works best.
Helpful
Installation Tips
A “Bo-Wrench” is useful
to straighten deck boards and maintain consistent joint
spacing.
A #8 screw setter will
simultaneously drill the screw’s pilot hole and bore
3/8” for the plug.
Do not over tighten
screws. They
should just countersink with the center hole of the Ipe Clip®.
Assure that wood
decking has been acclimated to your climate before
installing deck boards.
For most Ipe, one week
on the jobsite should be sufficient to prevent decks
boards from
excessive shrinkage.
